A guy I know bought a pound of this stuff for 16 bucks. Fresh, not dry. The taste is smooth... too smooth for my tastes. I looked it up online - they offer Red as full flavored, Gold as light, and Silver as extra light. I had to double check his bag to make sure he didn't buy the gold or silver. Nope - it's red. There's nothing particularly wrong with it - the taste, shred, moistness, etc. was by no means substandard - it's just not my cup of tea. If you like to smoke Marlboro Lights, give this a try.
David,
ReplyDeleteI found your page a few days ago. I've been trying various blends of tobacco that would work well as RYO but sold as pipe tobacco. Keep up the good work, it's very informative.
I wanted to suggest two recommendations I have for RYO folks...plus one that I think they can pass up on...
I tried three blends from Daughters & Ryan (D & R) based on posts I found on the net.
I highly recommend you try D & R Three Sails, and D & R Ryback Gold. Both are shag cut Virginia blends, with essentially no casing or topping. Nice shag, unadulterated tobacco. These work excellent in my little Zigzag hand injector out of bag, no drying necessary.
I also tried the D & R Ramback, but this is a turkish flake cut blend that I found too mild for a cig. It also did not burn as well as the shag cut. Maybe you could dry it out further, but still the flavor was not what I was looking for.
See if your local shop carries D & R. I am from Portland, Oregon and there is an excellent shop called 82nd Ave Pipe & Tobacco in Portland, and they sell these bulk as low as 0.5 oz. An oz. is about $2.80 or $3 with tax. Enough to make a few packs of cigs. http://fujipub.com/82ave/
Keep up the good work. Pipe tobacco is still relatively inexpensive, but still it's great to hear someone's experience before spending some money when pipe tobacco seems so hit-or-miss for RYO.
